Talk of hidden tunnels around Milwaukee might elicit thoughts of shady Prohibition-era smuggling rings. The history of at least one tunnel in the city is a bit more innocent — though the fact that no remnants of it remain today adds a bit of excitement to its buried history. This tunnel's story is part of the What in the Wisconsin? where readers submit questions about Wisconsin and we try to answer them. One reader remembered playing in a tunnel as a child and wondered what its story was.To find the answer, we searched through archives of the Milwaukee Journal, the Milwaukee Sentinel and Marquette Tribune archives and got help from the City of Milwaukee Central Drafting & Records Department and alumni of Gesu Grade School.
